I Sounds Phonics

The short i sound is very common in words such as “it” and “in.”

There are a lot of short vowel sounds in English. They are often overlooked but they can be very difficult for children to learn.

The following words all have the short I sound:

I, it, is, in, am, if

When teaching vowel sounds, it is important to teach the short vowel sound as well. This way, students will be able to read words like “sit” and “bit”.

The letter i is often used in words that have a short vowel sound.

It can also be used in words that have a long vowel sound. For example, the word “pie” has a long vowel sound but the letter i appears at the end of it.

It’s important we don’t confuse learners with the long vowel sounds.

I love using games and hands-on printables to teach the vowel sounds!
