My ESL students are still continuously working on their wh- questions, so I try to include them anytime I make a little reading activity.

Scary story reading comprehension pdf

These Halloween stories aren’t scary as I. Horror, because we don’t want to terrify the students, but they border on thrillers and funny scary stories.

Some of the questions include ‘how’, however mostly contain wh- question words.

Question words allow students to connect with the text and understand it better once they are able to answer the questions about the text.

Wh- question words story printables

My favorite printable to get the students applying their comprehension skills to the text, is to have them read the text and highlight the new words they don’t understand, then they will try to find these in their bilingual dictionary.

They will then read each question and answer it.

I get them to write the title of the text they are ready along with the number.

How to introduce ESL students to reading

When you introducing a new reading text, you would simple present vocabulary scaffolding first. This way students aren’t alarmed by the number of new words they see in the text.

ESL Halloween stories

If you’re looking for some super cute Halloween stories, these are perfect for your ESL students.

Stories are listed below:

The ghost in my garden

Once there was a girl who loved to play in her garden. She walked out one day to play. She sees a ghost. The ghost says to her, “I like playing outside too.”

She liked the ghost, but asked him if he knew why he was a ghost. He said he doesn’t know, he is only a ghost on Halloween. Then he removes his white shirt and she sees his face. It’s her neighbour! How silly.

Crazy bats

There was a boy named Charlie. He was scared of bats. One day, he went to school and he saw a bat inside the classroom. All the kids can’t see this bat.

Only Charlie can. He kept hiding from the bat, and one day, the bat spoke and said “no one can see me because I’m not real.” The bat then flew away.

Charlie thought that was so silly. So he followed the bat, it went to a tree outside and the bat showed Charlie All about its life.

The bat was happy and friendly sharing food and playing with its bat friends. Charlie thought he will never be scared of bats anymore!
