In December, I love to talk and build social skills around cultural awareness. What better time to discuss this than during December when doing your Christmas around the world theme?
The best way to begin discussing traditions around Christmas is to start a discussion and perhaps a large anchor chart with circles that have the name of countries in them, let the kids tell you what they do at Christmas time.
Christmas riddles for kids. Download a copy of these super fun riddles which double as phonics and letter activities.
For instance in the USA they decorate the outside of their homes with lights, Santa and reindeer.
In Australia they break out the bbq and shorts, sunscreen and hats. The family comes around for Christmas day and they go to mass that night on Christmas Eve or the following morning.
In Hawaii the family feasts on Kuala pig. It’s a tradition done for years.

These ideas are a great way to get kids talking to one another and getting to know each other.
This also builds upon acceptance and friendships.

A few years ago, I wanted to make sure I had mini reading task cards for my students to have their hands on during December. First, to build reading fluency skills and second, to build reading comprehension skills.
I’m always looking for ways to help ignite that passion for reading.
These reading comprehension task cards are differentiated and leveled so that I could use them with multiple learners.
I often put them in groups and rotate the cards.
