Letters and sounds phase 1
In phase 1, we are teaching letters and sounds.
Today, I’ll share some super fun ideas where you could practice letter sounds with some cut and paste activities to support learners in letter sound-mapping.
These activities help support kids in preschool as well as toddlers in learning their letter sounds while recognising letter formation in different fonts too.
Why Teach Children Letter Sounds?
Teaching children the letter sounds is essential for them to learn how to read.
It can be a difficult task for parents and teachers, but there are many ways to teach letter sounds that make it more enjoyable for the child.
Letter sounds are the building blocks of reading and writing. They give children a way to sound out words and decode unfamiliar ones.
An awareness of letter sounds is also an important part of spelling, which helps children spell words correctly.
Teaching the alphabet and the sounds they make
The alphabet is a set of letters that represent the sounds of spoken language. The letters are used to write words and sentences.
The alphabet is composed of 26 letters, which are called “alpha” or “lower case” letters. The alphabet also has 10 “capital” or “upper case” letters, which are used for writing names and for beginning sentences.
Alphabet – An ordered set of symbols that represent the sounds in speech and writing.
Letter – A written symbol representing a sound or combination of sounds in the spoken form of language.

Practicing letter sounds with a partner
Children can practice letter sounds with a partner game.
This game is a fun way to teach kids the alphabet and letter sounds.
The first player says the sound of a letter, and the second player has to say a word that starts with that sound.

Learning About Consonant and Vowel Teams
The consonant-vowel team is a very important concept in phonology. This important step will teach kids blending CVC letters to blend and make new words.
My favorite CVC words activities:
It is an important tool for understanding the rules of stress and syllable reduction.
One way to learn about consonant-vowel teams is to learn about the various combinations of consonants and vowels.
For example, take the word “cat”. The first vowel in this word, “a”, is followed by a single consonant “t”. This creates a syllable that consists of one vowel and one consonant. This is called an open syllable.
The next vowel in the word “cat” is “i”. The second letter in this word, “c”, makes a different sound than the first letter, which creates a closed syllable with two vowels and two consonants.
But before this critical step, kids need to learn proper letter sounds.
Adding activities like these below, will help them remember letters and associate letter sounds with them too.
