The letter A is the first letter of the alphabet. It is often used in words that start with a vowel sound.
The letter A is best introduced with fun games. One fun activity you can use with the whole class, is to create a game where you write the letters on a dry erase board, and ask the kids to erase the letter “a” on the board.

In this article, we will discuss some tips to teach the letter A (lower case letters and upper case letters) to kids using a handprint letter a template along with some qtip paint activities.
I LOVE using the alphabet song to also teach the letter sounds. It is perfect for 3 year olds in particular.
Best way to teach letter knowledge
Firstly, you may want to print the templates as large letters on display posters. This means that the kids can use enough space to paint the letter form as well as handprint their posters.
How is the letter A sound made?
The sounds that make up the letter A are a-a-a.
The sound aa is made by putting your tongue against your teeth at the front of your mouth and blowing air out between them.
The sound a is made by putting your tongue against the roof of your mouth behind your teeth and blowing air out between them.
Showing kids how they can reproduce the sound is important, watching you make the sound will help them eventually make the proper sound the letter A produces.
Use play dough to teach alphabet letters
Kids will learn the proper way to form letters by using a letter shape template along with some play dough to form the letters.

Use this super cute handprint poster template to create a personalised letter A art activity.
You can include the ABC song and letter cards along with this activity too, while kids practice making their templates, they can also learn to say the letter A as well as the sound.
Add little bins with magnetic letters to have them match the letters onto their mats too!
Letter formation for young learners
This is my favorite way to practice letter formation, have them use qtips to create their letter on the poster included.
This template also includes a section where they will need to search for he letter A and then use a dot marker to locate it, you can however, get them to use qtips to do this!
Add the child’s name to the poster set so they can refer to the shape of the letter as well as the posters anytime.
These activities are essential for phonemic awareness skills as well as fine motor skills.
