There are so many scissor and cutting worksheets available on the internet.

I find that I continuously need cutting sheets or cards that are easier for kids to see the lines to cut.

What are some ways to help preschoolers develop scissor skills?

Provide safety scissors: Preschoolers need scissors that are safe and easy to handle.

You can choose scissors with rounded tips and plastic blades, which will not cut hair, clothing, or skin.

Check out this super fun hair cutting Minions themed printable where kids will follow the lines to cut each Minion’s hair.

These also come in black and white.

Some children are still working on holding the scissors, so it’s essential we don’t make it more difficult for them to learn how to use the scissors.

How to work on scissor skills daily

Demonstrate the proper technique:

Show children how to hold the scissors properly, with their thumb in the small hole and their fingers in the larger one.

Demonstrate how to open and close the scissors by squeezing and releasing.

Provide different materials to cut:

Provide children with a variety of materials to cut such as paper, straws, or play dough.

This will help them practice different scissor skills.

Provide guidelines: Provide guidelines or dotted lines on paper, so children have a clear idea of where to cut. You can also draw shapes for them to cut out.

Offer praise and encouragement:

Encourage preschoolers to use their scissors and offer praise for their efforts.

This will help them develop their confidence in using the scissors.

Supervise their activities:

Always supervise children while they are using scissors, to ensure their safety and to provide assistance if needed.

Make it fun:

Incorporate fun activities like cutting out pictures for a collage or creating paper chains, to make scissor skills practice more enjoyable.

Practice scissor skills often:

Encourage children to practice their scissor skills regularly, to help them improve and build their dexterity.

Remember, the key to helping preschoolers with scissor skills is to make it fun, safe, and enjoyable.

By providing them with the right tools, materials, and guidance, you can help them develop the skills they need to be successful.

The child will use these to practice the skill of using scissors by cutting them into smaller pieces.

These cutting strips are pre-made, so print them out, add them to your jar of cutting strips along with some scissors and you’re done!

Scissor Skills for Kindergarten

First,  I would print out the apple strips and then instruct the students that they will need to cut their apples this morning.

They will then pick a strip (again, choose the set that is easiest to begin with) and then they will follow the line to cut the strip.  They continue this until all the strips are cut.

Instruct them to start at the red dots, I have mixed levels in my classes so I love incorporating different kinds of cutting strips.
