WH Digraphs

One important aspect of this is introducing them to digraphs, which are pairs of letters that represent a single sound.

Two commonly used digraphs in the English language are WH and SH.

In this blog post, we will discuss the benefits of using WH and SH digraphs worksheets and printable games to help your child master these important language concepts.

WH Digraph: This is a combination of the letters “W” and “H.”

It is commonly used at the beginning of words such as “when,” “where,” and “why,” and represents the sound /w/.

These worksheets can be used to help students learn the phonics sound, and practice reading, writing, and spelling words with the “wh” sound.

    Teaching WH Digraph

By mastering WH and SH digraphs, your child can improve their overall reading skills.

These digraphs are used in many common words and by recognizing them, your child can read more fluently and with greater comprehension.

    1. Introduce the concept: Start by explaining to your students what a digraph is and how it differs from a single letter sound. Explain that the “wh” digraph is made up of two letters that work together to make a single sound.
    2. Pronunciation practice: Model the correct pronunciation of the “wh” sound for your students. Encourage them to practice saying the sound themselves and to pay attention to how the lips and tongue move when making the sound.
    3. Word lists: Provide a list of words that contain the “wh” digraph, such as “what,” “when,” “where,” “which,” and “why.” Have students practice saying the words aloud and identifying the “wh” sound in each one.

The packet above includes the words: 1. ship 2. shop 3. which 4. when 5. whip 6. fish 7. shell (final double consonant) 8. graph (ph sounds like /f/).

What if students struggle learning the WH digraph?

    1. Start by explaining what a digraph is and how the WH digraph is two letters “w” and “h” put together to make a new sound. Show the students how to say the sound and ask them to practice saying it too.
    2. Give the students a list of words that have the WH sound, like “what,” “when,” “where,” “which,” and “whale.” Ask them to say the words and find the WH sound in each one.
    3. Use pictures or flashcards to help the students see and remember the WH sound. For example, show a picture of a whale and ask the students to say the WH sound in the word “whale.”
    4. Give the students reading materials that have words with the WH sound. Ask them to read the words and find the WH sound in each one.
    5. Ask the students to write words with the WH sound, and make sure they include the WH letters in their spelling.
    6. Play games or do activities that help the students practice the WH sound. For example, you can match words with pictures or go on a hunt to find words with the WH sound in books or other written materials.

These steps can help students understand the WH sound and improve their reading and phonics skills.
