Practice 2D shapes with this hands-on fall shape matching activity for preschool, kindergarten, and SPED math centers and independent work.

Students spin the shape spinner, identify the shape, and then find a matching foam shape to place on the fall tree. It works well for math centers, independent work, morning work, task boxes, and fine motor practice.

How to Set Up the 2D Shape Activity

Print the activity mats on cardstock and laminate them so they can be reused throughout the season. Cut out and laminate the spinner, then use a paper clip and pencil or attach a reusable spinner arrow.

For the hands-on pieces, use foam 2D shape stickers or foam geometric shapes. Look for a mixed pack containing shapes such as:

circles, squares, triangles, rectangles, and ovals.

Students can place the foam pieces directly onto the matching spaces. If you want the pieces to stay attached to the learning folder, add hook-and-loop dots to the mat and matching pieces.

For students who need additional support, begin with only two or three shapes and gradually introduce more. Students who are ready for more independence can use the spinner and complete the activity without adult prompting.
