C and K games
When I first started working on phonics with my ESL students, I began noticing that they needed more practice on encoding skills, which is to actually put the rules into practice.
C or K rules
At the beginning of the word, we use C when the firts vowel in the word is A, O, or U.
We use L when the first vowel in the word is an I or E.
The letter C is a consonant and it can be spelled as either /s/ or /k/. The most common words that have the letter C are cat, car, cake, and can.
The sound for the letter C is sometimes spelled with a K. Words that have a K in them are key, kick, and king.
C or K sounds
Confusion between the letters c and k is a common problem for children learning to read.
Some words have both a c and k sound, such as cat and kit.
Other words have only one letter with the c or k sound, such as cake or cookie.
Children often confuse these letters because they are not able to hear the difference in sounds.
This is because their ears are not fully developed yet, so they can’t tell the difference between these two similar sounding letters.
ESL students often confuse these sounds too. This game is super simple to prep, just download the PDF at the bottom of this post, print and have it ready with pencils and some clips.

K sound activities
K sound activities are a great way for children to learn about the letter K.
One activity is to search for k words in magazines or books and cut out the words.
The child can then make a collage of all the words they found with pictures or drawings of things that start with K.
Another activity is to draw pictures of things that start with K and then find a corresponding word in their reading material.
Beginning sound activities – movement printables for preschoolers.
C sound activities
Making the C sound is often trickier for kids and ESL learners since the letter C is named “see” and the sound it makes is “ka”.
Some of the words also make the sound “s” in letter C.
This in all honesty, can confuse learners of all ages.
Having them practice using the rules of c or k plus showing them examples of where they fall in the word would essentially help them master c or k words.
