Sight word activities are a great way to teach children how to read.

The goal of sight word activities is to help children learn their sight words. Sight words are the most commonly used words in the English language, and knowing them will help children become better readers.

Sight word activities can take many forms, such as games, flashcards, and puzzles.

Because sight words don’t follow the conventional norms of phonetic words but yet make up a significant fraction of the words we use in written communication every day, they are an essential component of the reading puzzle for preschoolers and kindergarteners.

For young readers, having a solid command of sight words can make the difference between struggling with reading and having high reading comprehension.

According to studies, when learning is enjoyable, youngsters retain more of it.

Some children find it challenging to memorise things, therefore teachers must find innovative ways to help their students learn sight words and become proficient readers.

The best part about these engaging preschool color-by-sight word worksheets is that they help children remember the words they learn while also getting them enthused about sight words.

This is why I like to include hands-on games and activities like this snowman game below.

Reading sight words

It’s no question that the more students are exposed to sight words, the better they learn them.

Teaching sight words doesn’t need to be repetitive.

Using games, printable and hands on activities will help keep kids motivated to learn new words and practice sight words they already know.

How to teach sight words

There are multiple ways to teach sight words especially now with the new Science of Reading method which I think is one of the best ways to target phonics and sight words (heart words).

Learners are able to recognise the phonemes in each word to utter the sound it makes.

Teaching heart words is a fairly new concept but it works wonders by allowing learners the autonomy of working out that there are parts in a word that may be difficult to remember.

So it would need to be memorised by heart (hence the reason for adding the heart on the heart words).

Sight Word Games

Sight word activities can be done in a variety of ways and with different materials.

Some teachers use sight word activities to teach children to recognize the words and their meaning. This can be done by reading them, writing them, or singing the words.

Sight word activities are also used to help children learn how to read quickly and fluently. These games can be played at home or in school with a parent or teacher.

To prepare this sight word center, you will need a few materials:

  • cotton balls optional
  • Laminator optional
  • The printable mats below
  • crayons
  • glue

The easiest way to keep games like this and preserve them is to laminate them however, you can still use them without laminating.

Print the set of word games you want to use and then the matching snowman cut out.

Laminate the sight word cards for durability and then have the child choose a card and find it on the snowman.

They keep going until they build their snowman.
