These fall subitizing activities turn that practice into a simple hands-on math center. Students spin the spinner, look at the quantity shown, and add the matching number of manipulatives to the activity mat.

The spinners include different ways of representing numbers, including numerals, dots, fingers, tally marks, and ten frames. This gives students practice recognizing the same quantity in different forms.

How to Set Up These Fall Subitizing Activities

Print the mats and spinners on cardstock and laminate them for repeated use. Add a spinner arrow or use a paper clip and pencil to create an easy classroom spinner.

For Fill the Squirrel’s Cheeks, provide small acorn manipulatives. You can use mini acrylic acorns, fall counters, foam acorns, or laminated paper acorns.

For Hide the Turkey, use artificial fall leaves, foam leaves, or laminated leaf pieces. Students spin, recognize the quantity, and place that many leaves over the turkey.

You can also add hook-and-loop dots if you’d like the manipulatives to stay attached to the mats.

For students just beginning to subitize, start with the 1–4 spinners. As students become more confident, introduce the larger-number spinners and different representations.
