These hands-on fall math activities give students a visual way to practice making 10, number bonds, ten frames, and addition within 10 using acorns and colorful fall leaves.

They’re easy to prepare for kindergarten math centers, first grade practice, special education, intervention, morning work, and independent math activities.

Fill the Acorn Stash – Making 10

In this activity, students use the ten frame inside the squirrel’s acorn stash to explore different combinations that make 10.

Students spin a number and place that many acorns into the ten frame. They then work out how many more acorns are needed to fill the frame and make 10.

Using real manipulatives makes the number relationship much easier to see. Students aren’t simply memorizing that 4 + 6 = 10—they can physically see the four counters, the six empty spaces, and the complete group of ten.

Bury the Fox – Addition Within 10

The silly fox is trying very hard not to get buried under fall leaves!

Students create two groups using red and yellow leaves, combine the groups, and record the corresponding addition equation.

This gives students a concrete way to see that addition means putting two groups together to find the total.

How to Set Up the Fall Math Activities

Print the mats and spinners on cardstock and laminate them for repeated use.

You can use the included printable pieces or add your own manipulatives. For the squirrel activity, try mini acorns, acrylic acorns, fall counters, or small pom-poms. For the fox activity, use mini artificial leaves, foam leaves, acrylic leaves, or fall counters.

Place the manipulatives in a small container beside the mat and add a reusable spinner arrow or use a paper clip and pencil.

For students who need more support, begin with smaller numbers and model each addition problem using the manipulatives. Students ready for independent practice can spin, build the groups, find the total, and write the equation themselves.

These activities can be reused throughout fall for math centers, task boxes, independent work, small-group instruction, intervention, and early finishers.
