How Does Verb Tense Bingo Work?
It’s simple! Each student gets a Bingo board filled with sentences—but there’s a catch. Some words are missing, and students need to fill in the blanks with the correct verb tense (either present or past).
Once their boards are ready, it’s game time! I’ll read out full sentences, and students must find the matching one on their board and mark it.
But—here’s the kicker—the sentence must be 100% correct for it to count. This means students aren’t just passively listening; they’re actively checking their grammar knowledge.

How to Play: Step-by-Step Instructions for Teachers
Here’s how you can set up and run Verb Tense Bingo in your classroom:
1. Prepare the Bingo Boards
Print out the 28 unique Bingo boards and distribute them to students. Each board contains a mix of sentences with missing verbs, requiring students to fill in the blanks with the correct verb tense before the game begins. You may want to review verb tense rules beforehand to set them up for success.
2. Review the Rules
Explain to students how the game works:
- They must correctly complete each sentence on their board by filling in the missing verb in either the present or past tense.
- Once the boards are filled out, they cannot change their answers.
- When you call out a sentence, they should look for the exact sentence on their board and mark it if they have it.
- The first student to mark five sentences in a row (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally) wins!
3. Filling in the Sentences
Give students time to complete their boards. You can have them work individually or in pairs for extra support. Walk around the room and offer guidance to ensure students are correctly applying verb tenses.
4. Start Calling Out Sentences
Once all students have filled in their boards, it’s time to play! Read each sentence aloud with the correct verb tense and give students a moment to locate and mark it. Encourage them to read carefully to ensure their sentence matches exactly.
5. Check for Accuracy
Before declaring a winner, review their marked sentences to make sure they are correct. If any mistakes are found, continue playing until a valid winner is found.
6. Extend the Learning
After the game, reinforce learning by:
- Discussing common errors and explaining why certain verb tenses were used.
- Having students write their own sentences using past and present tenses.
- Playing another round with different Bingo boards to reinforce their skills.
