How to Homeschool as a Single Mom

Forget Pinterest-perfect schedules, mama. Here’s the real deal: single homeschooling is messy, chaotic, and sometimes downright frustrating.

Single moms who homeschool: I salute you. It’s a demanding path, filled with both challenges and triumphs. This section dives into the nitty-gritty of managing your time, creating a learning space, and keeping everyone (including yourself!) sane.

Forget the picture-perfect homeschool setups you see online. We’ll focus on practical strategies that fit into your already busy life. Let’s ditch the overwhelm and embrace a realistic approach to single homeschooling.

But hey, you’re raising incredible humans in your own unique way!

Here are 20 tips for surviving (and even thriving) in the trenches.

Time Management (the flexible kind)

Let’s face it, mom schedules can sometimes look like non-schedules because what you plan – does not work out most of the time.

I still believe in lists, you can bet your bottom I do, I have lists sitting everywhere! But when there are hard days, and you can count on having hard days, I try to focus on one *important* thing at a time.

Tackle it this this way means, that you wont feel overwhelmed and do nothing – because we all do this and the human brain can only tackle so much.

The other thing is, you also won’t feel like a failure if you don’t accomplish what you set out to do. Here are my favorite tools for time management:

Did you know a planner is one of the most sought after time mamagement tool? Not only does it help you tackle the impossible – but it also allows you to carry over any tasks you hadn’t done that day. And that’s okay!

Here are my favorite planners:

Focus on these tips here for time management.

  1. Embrace the “do-one-thing-at-a-time” method: Multitasking is a myth. Focus on one task (folding laundry while listening to a lesson) and move on. I think this was one of the top choices, we often carry so many things at once.
  2. Schedule “catch-up” time: Things will fall behind. Plan buffer periods to tackle unexpected interruptions.
  3. Leverage screen time strategically: Educational shows or apps can buy you precious prep time. I particularly love TinyTap, you can even create your own games to target specific skills.
  4. Batch cook…ish: Make a big pot of soup for lunches, but don’t stress about fancy dinners. I share so many of these easy leftover meal plans here on my sister site.
  5. Negotiate with your kids: Clean the living room for 30 minutes, then we can have free play time outside. You’d be surprised how much this works! I even use things they love like, jello, ice cream etc.

  1. Dedicated learning space? More like “learning corner”: Use a corner of the room, a foldable table – flexibility is key.
  2. Planners are great, but sticky notes are your new best friend: Quick reminders on the fridge or bathroom mirror can be lifesavers.
  3. Simplify the curriculum (again): Focus on core subjects and skip the extras that overwhelm you both.
  4. Let go of perfect: A messy lesson learned is better than no lesson at all. I mean it, sometimes it is better done than perfect!
  5. “Me-time” might be a 5-minute shower: That’s okay! Take stolen moments when you can.

Managing Behavior (because meltdowns happen)

When managing behaviors, I always like to begin with social and emotional learning resources with my own kids.

Why? Because, what use is it if they aren’t able to focus on core curriculum if their emotional needs aren’t met.

Starting off with social skills only sets you off on the right path from the start!

  1. Clear expectations? More like daily reminders: Kids forget, so be patient and repeat yourself.
  2. Positive reinforcement: Praise effort, not just results. Even if they make mistakes, keep those reinforcements.
  3. Take a walk (even if it’s just around the block): A change of scenery can work wonders.
  4. Embrace the educational value of tantrums: Sometimes, they’re about big emotions, not defiance.
  5. Find your online tribe: Connect with other homeschool moms who understand the struggle. There are tons of Facebook communities just for Homeschool moms.

Bonus Tips for the Real World

Alright, let’s get real. Sometimes that color-coded schedule I spent hours on gets tossed out the window faster than yesterday’s laundry.

And educational shows? Yeah, they’ve definitely saved my sanity (and maybe bought me five minutes to pee in peace) on more than one occasion.

Here’s the thing: that’s totally okay! This bonus section is all about the tricks I’ve learned in the trenches of single homeschooling.

We’ll talk about using technology to our advantage, finding ways to get some help (because seriously, who doesn’t need a break?), and even celebrating those unexpected moments that make this journey so darn special.

  1. Embrace online resources: Free educational websites and Youtube channels are your friends.
  2. Don’t be afraid to outsource: Can a neighbor’s teenager help with math for an hour a week?
  3. Celebrate the unexpected: Did your science experiment turn into a kitchen explosion? Call it a “learning experience.”
  4. Focus on the connection, not the curriculum: These are the years you’ll remember fondly.
  5. You are fierce: Single homeschooling is a badge of honor. Wear it proudly, mama!

This approach acknowledges the real challenges of single homeschooling and offers practical solutions.
