I am trying out one of the awesome teaching packs that The Kindergarten Connection has up her sleeve. I chose her Alphabet Puzzles pack – not only for its versatile use but because I know that I can use this with my tutoring students and not just in class.

Once I downloaded the pack, I saw that it was neatly set out and included all the letters from A-Z. Here is how I will use this pack in tutoring in the coming weeks. It is targeted at Kindergarten students, but I will be using it with my ESL student who is in first grade to work on beginning letter sounds.

I chose letter ‘Ee’ to show an example in this blog post on how to use it. So after I printed it, laminated and cut it up, this is what it looked like. As you can see the puzzle shapes are quite easily marked and can be cut up nicely:

The way I would use this puzzle is first I would tell the student that we are going to be putting together a puzzle for the letter ‘Ee’ and with my student I will be showing him the final puzzle to give him clue or image to start with as his level is quite low with an ESL background. Then we will begin constructing the puzzle, but first I will be asking him to identify what he sees in each puzzle piece (an elf, an elephant etc) to work on beginning sounds with ‘e’. I will also ask him how he will be finding the pieces that come together. I will be showing the final piece a few times before he completes it I know for sure.

Once we complete this process, I will then ask him to name each picture in the puzzle one we’ve completed it! You can find this pack right here at the Kindergarten Connection store. 🙂
