Getting students to identify between long and short ‘a’ sounds can be so tricky! I use so many manipulatives and listening activities to help them identify the sounds but I still find that ESL students struggle with this skill! So I’m always making new and fun activities to practice their sounds.
This activity will pair well with these fun Long and Short a Color By Code Mystery Pictures Activity Pack.
This activity is easy to set up and play!
To play:
- print as many sheets as you need for the class (one for each student).
- instruct the students to use a paper clip and a pencil to spin the spinner.
- They identify the sound that they landed on (e.g: ‘ay’, ‘a’ etc…)
- They then look for the word that corresponds to the same sound.
- They keep going until all their ‘eggs’ have been colored.
- Encourage the kids to say the word out loud and then color it.
I usually do this activity after we’ve been practicing CVC words too. My students always need help with short vowel sounds as well. I find that the quicker they can identify short vowel sounds, the quicker they will be able to identify the long ones.
